Psychiatry is a medical specialty. It involves the diagnosis, management and treatment of mental disorders which can present in the form illnesses, conditions and the complex interphase between the physical and mental realms.
Psychiatrists are medical specialists and have to graduate from medical school and undergo specialist training to qualify as a specialist. In Australia and New Zealand the governing qualifying body is the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).
We provide specialist psychiatry consultations across a broad range of issues and ages. Where beneficial, we co-manage patients with other medical practitioners, psychologists, mental health nurses or other allied health providers to provide a broader, discipline-specific intervention.
Psychology
Psychology is the practice of the art of psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is a broad term to include different types of therapy modalities, such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to name a few. Different psychological issues require different types of therapy.
There is a tendency in this day and age to have a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to psychotherapy. At The Shrink Company we believe that every person and situation is unique and that is why we seek to identify the right therapy, for the right person, in the right situation, and at the right time. Our psychologists work alongside your referring doctor and in many cases alongside our psychiatrists to provide holistic care. After all, all current evidence supports the benefits of concurrent psychiatric and psychological intervention in providing the best and quickest positive outcomes.
